In addition to Teaching and training activities of Diploma in Epidemiology (DFE), Master Public Health (MPH) and Saudi board in Community and Family Medicine, FETP is also actively organizing short training courses in different regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These are 3-5 days trainings, which are need based customized trainings addressing a specific area of Public Health. These trainings cover a wide range of health professionals of the Ministry of Health including medical consultants, specialist, physicians, health inspectors, technicians and other technical staff.
Research plays a pivotal role in any Public Health discipline. This course is designed to provide the participants with the fundamental concepts of the research methodology including identifying the problems of research, prioritizing the research problems, formulation of research objectives and study questions, transforming study questions into variables, designing data collection Instruments, plan for data collection, pretesting, work plan and preparing budget, plan for data analysis, software tools for research data analysis, univariate, bivariate analysis and hypothesis testing and presenting study findings. The course methodology includes Lectures following by group work, group discussion and group presentation.
Main objectives of the training is provide the participants with through understanding of the various methods used in conducting a health research and to educate them with all the necessary steps of conducting the research starting from identifying the research problem to presentation of the final steps.
The course is useful refresher for the public health doctors and also for the other clinical and non-clinical health professionals who plans to conduct health research.
Target Audience: Consultants, Physicians, Nurses, Allied health care professionals, Medical Students.
The training duration is five days. Training methodology include Lectures, group exercises, group discussion and presentations.
Data Management is the integral part of any Health Research. FETP has designed a course on Basic Data Management using EPI Info Software. Epi Info is statistical software, primarily designed for handling epidemiological research data but it can also be used for any research project. The software is designed by Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta, USA, who are still developing and maintain this software. This is an old software. First version was released some 25 years ago. Regarding the wide application of this software, Epi Info is a key component in public health education at colleges, universities, and other schools of public health around the world. Epi Info is being used in more than 181 countries of the world and there are more than one million users of Epi Info worldwide.
The method of course delivery has been improved a lot over the period of time. Since 2013, a web based training portal “Epi Info-7 Training Portal” has been developed which is effectively used throughout the training period of the course. The main features of the training portal include; online participant registration, step by step illustrated guidelines to complete the various training activities, a complete online illustrated training manual along with activity evaluation check lists, course material downloads, submitting and uploading the completed assignments and feedback. An online quiz is also included in the web portal where candidates securing 70% marks and above are awarded online certificates. In addition, the portal also includes the registered participant database along with visual gallery of trainings conducted. During the progression of the course our team of experts and dedicated facilitators fully supervise and support the participants in completing various training activities and also provide them with the prompt feedback of their submitted activities.
FETP is only department of MOH, KSA which is specialized in the Epi Info Trainings throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia conducting numerous trainings in almost all regions of the Kingdom. The main focus is to develop and enhance the skills of the participants for efficient Health Data Management and Analysis using Epi Info software.
Epidemiological research has become an important tool in the study of the aetiology and natural history of infectious and non-infectious diseases, and in assessing health effects in populations. This five days course on the basic principles and methods of epidemiology and medical statistics. The emphasis is given on the design and interpretation of epidemiological studies. Appropriate statistical methods are integrated with the main epidemiological content, and in practical sessions participants are given exposure to relevant computer software.
Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
Understand the basic principles of: descriptive epidemiology, analytic epidemiology, descriptive biostatistics, public health surveillance and epidemiological investigations.
Use basic epidemiological skills to design and conduct a simple field project.
Gain experience in conducting a simple epidemiologic investigation.
Come up with practical recommendations from the findings of an epidemiologic investigation
Manage and analyze health data using statistical software.
Develop communication skills for dissemination of findings of epidemiological investigations.
Understand the role of the laboratory in public health.
Target audience: Public health professionals from MOH, KSA National and Provincial Departments of Health, Consultants, Physicians, Nurses and other technical staff who are directly or indirectly involved in communicable diseases control, disease surveillance, outbreak investigations and data management.
Keeping in view the popularity of the SPSS in Health Research, FETP has designed five days training course “Basic Data Management and Analysis for Epidemiological studies using SPSS”. SPSS is a gigantic software containing a battery of statistical procedures covering a wide range of statistical requirements in different disciplines of research settings. So, we have to limit SPSS usage to what is actually desired in Health Research and this has been especially taken care off while designing this course.
The software has a history of more than 50 years. It was originally created by three Stanford graduate students in the late 1960s. Over the years, SPSS expanded their package to address the hard sciences and business markets. In 2009, software was purchased by the IBM company and it was named as IBM SPSS Statistics.
SPSS stands for Statistical Analysis for Social Sciences. It is one of the popular commercial software for statistical analysis. The application of SPSS ranges from marketing research, Social sciences, Psychology, Health research and various other disciplines. SPSS is also one of the popular statistical software in Health and allied research projects.
SPSS is a commercial software and requires a valid license to operate. A free time limit trial version is available at the SPSS web site (http://www.spss.com) which is free download after registration with IBM. In this training course we will use the trial version of SPSS. If participants are interested to continue using the software after the expiry of the trial period, they are advised either to purchase the software or arrange for the valid license by requesting their parent organization.
The main purpose of this training course is to develop knowledge and skills among the participants for using SPSS in Health research. In order to accomplish this a series of five activities are designed which takes the participants step by step through the various procedures for creating datasets, managing data, generating frequencies, graphs, cross tabulations and testing research Hypothesis using various statistical procedures.
Target Audience: Consultants, Physicians, Nurses, Allied health care professionals, Medical Students. The training duration is five days. Training methodology include Lectures followed by skill building assignments, evaluation and discussion.
Above mentioned courses are not the only short courses offered by FETP. The program is self sufficient and has all the necessary skills of designing need based customized trainings on any topic of Public Health as and when demanded and required by the Ministry of Health. KSA.
