Salmonellosis outbreak among Alaqiq residents, Albaha, October 2020

Introduction

The current Food Borne Disease Outbreak (FBDO) began on October 2, 2020 among the residents of Alaqiq, which was considered the largest of its kind in Albaha region, Saudi Arabia. It was detected and investigation initiated on the same day, while it was declared over on October 8, 2020. Mian objective of the study was to investigate and control the current outbreak and prevent future similar outbreaks.

Methodology

A descriptive and analytic epidemiological investigations including case-control study, laboratory and environmental investigations were conducted.

Results

No deaths were reported, 54 cases were hospitalized, while the total number of reported cases was 131; including 73 (56%) female and 103 (78%) Saudi. The most likely incriminated risk factor was garlic sauce with degree of association of 3.17 and statistical significance of ?2 = 4.87; P-value = 0.02; Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.23 - 8.15.

Conclusion

Distinctive characteristics that met the case and outbreak definition with association to laboratory results, it was a salmonellosis FBDO with infection of S.enterica serotype Enteriditis.
